The year 2020 was 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Spotlight Theatre, based on West Street in Bridlington, was marking this historic year by producing a series of plays and theatrical shows themed around the Second World War.
However, due to the pandemic and closure of Spotlight Theatre in March 2020, sadly the productions never happened and the play Lilies on The Land never made it onto the stage.
However, the cast and audiences were promised that ‘Lilies’ would be the first Spotlight production when the theatre re-opened.
And the good news is that Lilies on the Land, directed by Joan Sanders, will be performed on the Spotlight stage in October this year.
Spotlight Theatre have been awarded a grant from Bridlington Town Council towards the production of this critically acclaimed play which toured nationally in 2011 and 2012 following great success in London’s West End in 2010.
Lilies on the Land is based on 150 letters and interviews with original Land Girls, along with songs from the period.
The play is a revealing, funny and a wonderfully moving portrait of four women who join the Women’s Land Army – determined to work endless, back breaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the war effort.
The women all hail from different walks of life but are torn from their families and deal with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war. It is a celebration of their friendship and family bond as the women work together to come to terms with the enormity of the war and its place in history.
Lillies on the Land is interspersed with music and songs from the period as well as historical newsreel footage of some of the events that helped to change our history.
