After being created and first hosted in Bridlington in 2018, the unique and hugely popular Race the Waves event has unfortunately been cancelled due to the pandemic.
Paul Garbutt, who is the organiser of the seafront spectacular, was understandably upset having to make the decision to cancel the beach-based racing weekend which was to take place on 15/16th May this year.
“Race the Waves at Bridlington has succumbed to COVID-19. Sadly, with the Public Health implications and uncertainties, we felt the correct course of action was not to attempt the running of our World renowned Beach Race this year. ” said Paul.
A statement to the Echo reads: ‘Backfire Promotions (the management for Race the Waves) together with the East Riding of Yorkshire Councils Events Team, after exploring all the ongoing uncertainties surrounding Covid-19, agreed to postpone the beach race scheduled for May 2021.
After the huge success of they initial event in 2018, a Steampunk Weekend was added alongside the beach racing in 2019, bringing thousands of visitors to the town.
Competitors and fans for the beach racing events came from all over the U.K. and a large number travelled from overseas. Vintage cars and motorbikes, along with many weird and wonderful vehicles took part in a fixed length route along a sectioned off race track on the South Beach in Bridlington.
Added Mr Garbutt: “We value greatly our excellent relationship and the support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and appreciate their difficult role with Public Health responsibilities for our Yorkshire Coastal visitors.”
Organisers are checking the tide tables for 2022 to find the most suitable weekend to host the event
