To celebrate the launch of the Indoor Volleyball Club at ER Leisure in Bridlington, guest of honour Ben Pipes ( London 2012 GB Volleyball Captain) helped to support and coach the opening session.
The weekly sessions will be free of charge for an initial eight weeks (activities will not take place on Bank Holidays) and is aimed at ages 18+. All abilities are welcome.
Ben, who comes from Hull said: Its, great. It is so nice to launch this event at the East Riding Leisure centre in Bridlington. I have seen all the groundwork, and this is a piece of a big picture that will join together the Active Coast project.”
Bridlington was the birthplace of my volleyball career, having played on the beach for the first time when I was a youngster. The town holds a very special place for me."
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said: “I am delighted that local sports star Ben Pipes helped us launch this new club.
“I very much hope that, over time, the volleyball club will be able to be sustained by participants and local players and develop strong links with other volleyball clubs across the region."
The establishment of the volleyball club is part of the council’s Active Coast Programme, which will officially launch in Easter 2017 and aims to ‘provide residents and visitors opportunities to get active, be healthy and enjoy life on the East Yorkshire coast’.
The club also further enhances the provision for volleyball in the Bridlington area and will provide a strong link to the Go Spike beach courts (situated near Princess Mary Promenade and South Cliff Beach, near Bridlington Park & Ride) and develop participants’ ability and confidence to play both indoors and outdoors.
