A new free council car park is due to open in Exchange Street, Driffield.
The new East Riding of Yorkshire Council car park, created on the site of the old cattle market, is scheduled to open on Wednesday 8 April.
As part of a land exchange, the site will replace the existing free car park at Eastgate, which will close and the land will be developed into a new Aldi supermarket, including parking for customers.
The new Exchange Street car park will provide 100 parking bays, including spaces for motorcycles, disabled parking and electric vehicles.
The car park has open views of the neighbouring Beck. New safety railings have been installed, as well as planting on the site.
The project has been funded entirely by Aldi, as part of the land exchange, and the work has been carried out by contractors Gatsby Group.
The old cattle market used to be a focal point in the town, hosting regular livestock auctions, but it closed in 2001 and the land remained empty since.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We’re delighted to be able to open this new free car park for the people of Driffield and visitors to the town, and to make use of a plot of land that has stood unused for so many years.
“We have been able to negotiate this comprehensive regeneration scheme involving a new Aldi, and when the new supermarket opens, this will offer even more parking spaces for the town.”
Simon Plumb, Aldi’s real estate director, said: “We’re pleased to be moving forward with our plans for a new Aldi store in Driffield and look forward to starting work on site in the days immediately following the closure of the existing council car park.
“This is an important town centre investment that will help bring a long‑underused site back into productive use, while providing improved choice and value for local shoppers.
“We will continue to work closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council as construction progresses, with the aim of opening the store ahead of Christmas 2026.”
