A former Royal Engineer is heading down the right tracks by collecting for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal on the railway.
Denis Scaife, who has recently moved to Bridlington is carrying out fundraising on the rail network around the country. Last year Denis, along with his friend John Winterburn aged 80, raised over £6,000 in only eight days of collecting.
Said Denis: “We aim to commence our travels at the end of October and early November using the service from Bridlington to Hull, Hull to Doncaster and then Doncaster to Newcastle. This is courtesy of Northern Rail, Hull Trains and LNER. Northern Rail are a new venture, however, Hull Trains and LNER are familiar with our faces and look after us well. Meanwhile, my wife Barbara and John’s wife, Brenda will be manning a Poppy stall in Bridlington railway station.”
Former non-commisioned Officer (sapper) with the Corps of Royal Engineers Denis was also a former police sergeant and has started supporting the Bridlington Branch of the Royal British Legion as soon as he located to Bridlington.
If you spot Denis and John on the railways or their wives collecting at Bridlington Railway Station say hello and pop a donation into the collecting tin…..they will be chuffed.
