A school plaque that was last presented over 35 years ago and had been missing since 1986 has been located
After dozens of telephone calls and hundred of enquiries the plaque was eventually unearthed and recently presented to a student at Martongate School in Bridlington.
Carol French, who lives in Bridlington, explained: “I have been trying for sometime to locate the North Wolds Endeavour Trophy – a trophy/plaque my parents donated in the 1970’s to the Chrysanthemum Show (Children’s Section) which used to be held annually.
“At the time my father, James Sawden, was a Councillor both at local and county level and I remember spending many hours trying to come up with the name for the trophy/plaque as it was important to us that it represented and acknowledged the work the individual child had put into their entry.” said Carol.
In the end Carol came up with the title ‘endeavour’ and the plaque was to be presented to a child who had shown every effort in their entry with no obvious assistance from a parents.
“The award was not to be the usual silver cup, but was crafted in wood and shaped like a boat sail. The thought behind this was that a child could if they worked hard sail on in their lives if they showed every endeavour achieve their dreams.”
“Unfortunately my father has passed away, but my mother, who is now 96, remembers the family organising the provision of this trophy/plaque. My mother was delighted when I was able to locate the award and with the help of the archivists at ERYC.” continued Carol.
“During his time serving the community James Sawden, became the Chair of Martongate School Governors; Mr John Taylor being the Headmaster at the time and my family thought it would be fitting to donate the Endeavour Trophy to Martongate Primary School. It would be awarded to a child each year who showed endeavour to achieve things to the best of their ability and who has tried their very best during the school year.” Carol added.
Over the years the plaque has suffered some minor damage, but has now been fully refurbished and was presented to Martongate pupil Connor Watson, aged seven, in a special ceremony at the school before the summer break.
The trophy/plaque was awarded annually to the following pupils.
