A firm favourite on the East Riding entertainment calendar has been cancelled.
Members of the Sewerby Cricket Club committee, who organise the hugely popular Sewerby Gala came to the tough decision to cancel this years event due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.
Vince O’Grady from the cricket club said: “Following a committee meeting it was decided that Sewerby CC will not be holding a Gala this year due to COVID 19 .”
The cliff top site for the Gala at Sewerby has been a magnet for locals and visitors alike for decades with people booking their summer holidays to coincide with the event.
He continued: “With all the uncertainty of the pandemic it was thought unfeasible to organise such an event – however all being well the Gala will be back in 2022.”
Originally set up by Sewerby CC President Ken Saul and a small steering committee, the Gala was a large part of the clubs income and helped to offset annual running costs.
Revenue was ploughed back into the club to help provide top class facilities and purchase equipment for training cricketers of all age groups.
Despite this setback the club have organised 8 Sunday friendlies for all levels of cricket.
The star fixture will be the only away friendly match at Chatsworth house in September – a treat for players and supporters alike.
Added Vince: “These are obviously dependent on Government and ECB guidelines regarding Covid.”
