The three iconic ‘Tommy Silhouettes’ that stood in the War Memorial Gardens on Prospect Street have been temporarily removed after one was damaged by vandals.
A member of the public alerted fund raiser Mike Rubery who spearheaded the fundraising campaign along with the Bridlington Echo in 2018 to buy the three statues. Almost £4,000 was raised in a matter of weeks to purchase and maintain the statues.
Said Mike: “They are all down now and in storage. It’s sad, but needs must. Unfortunately we don’t seem to be able to trust one or two individuals that have no respect for what those men did for them and our nation.’
“The steel back pack has been bent out of shape on one of the figures and it will now be repaired and along with the other two stored until this summer. On completion of the 2019 Remembrance commemorations they will be removed and stored again.” added Mike.
The good news is that the Tommys will be back in prime position for Submariners ‘Buddies in Boats’ weekend which this year will be 1st June.
