A Flamborough mum, who has lost almost five stone in weight, has also helped two local charities by taking on the challenging Yorkshire Three Peaks walk.

Penny Turner, who lives on South Sea Road in the village, had never walked more than a few miles.

But Penny decided she needed to lose weight and change her lifestyle drastically after a close relative passed away from cancer.

Penny also looks after a disabled child and wanted to get fit and healthy and with encouragement from her friends Asheligh and Leanne she joined Slimming World and lost a huge 65 pounds in weight.

Penny undertook the three peaks walk in early July, with her sister Christine, over a twelve hour period – scaling Ingleborough at 723 metres, Pen-y-Ghent (694m) and finishing atop of the 736 metre Whernside summit – all in one day.

“The walk was a total of 25 miles, and I had practiced along the rocky parts of our local beaches and around the cliff paths, but the day was extremely challenging – it’s one of the biggest personal achievements of my life so far.” explained Penny.

She decided to split funds that she raised between the Flamborough Lifeboat Station and village Pre-School and donations are still very welcome to help Penny reach her £500 target.

Penny and her husband Johnny were the owners of the popular Animal Encounters Reptile Show, but due to Covid restrictions closing down many events ,they had to shut the business down.

Penny is currently looking at retraining for a new career with Johnny taking up HGV driving.

“My Slimming World dietician Sue Balaban helped me through my weight loss programme and I certainly could’t have done the walk without losing the weight under her guidance.” added Penny.
