Bridlington students were amongst the awards at East Riding College’s awards ceremony that was held at Beverley recently.
The event saw over 50 students, employers and staff recognised for their achievements, dedication and hard work.
Student winners were nominated by their tutors and ranged from younger students on school-links programmes to adults who were retraining.
Award winners from the Bridlington area were Thomas Edeson, Maisie Banks, Hayley Campbell, Jordan Booth, Jacob Langton, Danielle Child, Svetlana Andonova Georgieva, Lewis Reynolds Parkes, Klaudia Kulczyk and Caitlin Ruddock
Of particular note was Danielle Child from Bridlington, winner of Student of the Year. The award recognised Danielle’s hard work and determination. She was nominated by her tutors on the Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance course. They commended her on her excellent test scores and practical results. Danielle started the course later than her course colleagues, but has worked hard in her own time to catch up and is now on target to complete the course on schedule. She hopes to move to the next level and become fully qualified to work in a garage and perhaps even start her own business one day.
Danielle said, “I was over the moon when I found out I’d been nominated and won. I couldn’t believe it, I was very chuffed indeed – especially as I had started late, it’s a real compliment. I started out on another course but then transferred to motor vehicle as I thought it was something I’d be better suited to, and I love it. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
Principal Derek Branton said, “Our annual awards are an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of some of our outstanding students and the progress they have made since enrolling at the College.
Danielle’s determination to catch up and put in the extra hours has paid dividends, and she has been a very good role model for other students.”
The evening included the College’s Annual General Meeting – in which Mr Branton looked back on a very successful 2015-16 academic year – and performances by music academy students. Student band The Underground Owls performed their new song City of Culture written for Hull 2017.
