Families from across the country gathered in Bridlington and Grimsby yesterday to mark the 85th anniversary of a wartime tragedy that claimed 21 lives.

On 11 April 1941, the vessels Yorkshire Belle and Othello were destroyed by a mine explosion in the Humber, leaving no survivors.
The commemoration coincided with the release of Mined in the Humber by historian Richard M. Jones, which documents the disaster and the lives of those aboard. Events began with a well-attended talk at Bridlington library before moving to memorial sites in both towns.

Relatives of the victims laid wreaths during simultaneous ceremonies, including tributes to Chief Petty Officer Ernest Edworthy, Acting Petty Officer Ernest Johnson, and Assistant Cook Donald Blair.

Attendees included Sea Cadets, RNLI members, veterans and local organisations.
