A newly formed Bridlington-based charity organisation will be hosting its official opening in March.
The Brid Men In Sheds Group was formed in September 2016, when three men got together and decided to form an organisation to help men meet up and form friendships to combat social isolation.
Keith Prime, one of the Bridlington founder members and organiser said: “We accept men from 18 to 108 and give back things we have made to the community. Items such as flower planters and furniture are built or restored in the workshops at our premises on Beck Hill.”
The club now has around 25 members and will be officially opened by the Mayor of Bridlington on March 1st.
Said Keith: “The ethos of the group is based on a place for men to meet and create things, have a chat and a cuppa, and enjoy like-minded company.”
“The Men in Sheds building on Beck Hill is owned by the Lords Feoffees, and our organisation is supported by them and Christ Church. We have also have had some grants from organisations such as Bridlington Town Council, RVS, Bridlington Regeneration
Partnership and also the Tesco Cash for Bags appeal. We are truly grateful for their help.” continued Keith.
The club meets four times a week; Tuesdays and Fridays 10.am to 12 noon, and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10.am to 3.pm and prospective members are always welcome to drop in for a drink and a chat.
One of the members, Peter Davis, is a sprightly 88-year-old , who enjoys the new found friendships and regularly beats all comers in his favourite past-time of Backgammon.
“I wanted to get involved in the local community” explained Peter. “It’s certainly a good way to make new friends and enjoy the social aspects of the club rather than sitting at home all day.”
Peter is an accomplished piano player and will be providing part of the entertainment during the opening event.
Men in Sheds also has nearby branches in Hull and Withernsea, and is rapidly becoming a nationwide organisation with clubs springing up all over the country.
“We are a friendly crowd and have an open-door policy. Our hobbies include photography, woodwork and joinery, as well as computer skills, cookery, board games and gardening. In fact if any member has a skill they are encouraged to share it and offer advice and guidance.” said Keith.
The official opening will take place on Thursday 1st March at 11.am
