An evening heat scare unfolded outside Jerome’s Ice Cream Parlour on Royal Princes Parade, Bridlington, just after 6pm on Sunday, May 25, as soaring temperatures appeared to take their toll on the pavement outside the seafront business.

With warm conditions gripping the resort and temperatures climbing high during the day, a section of paving suddenly rose, prompting concerns from people nearby during the unusually hot early evening conditions there.
Fire crews attended and used gas detection equipment together with a thermal imaging camera to inspect the affected area.

No gas readings were recorded and no heat source was detected. Crews later determined the raised pavement was caused by expansion in the warm weather, with no expansion points in the floor surface.
Firefighters used a sledgehammer and small tools to gain better access before cordoning off the area and leaving the incident with the business owner awaiting council and highways teams.

A spokesperson from Jerome’s said:
“The pavement outside of our ice cream parlour started to rise into a peak, causing significant damage to the footpath and kiosk.
“After contacting the council, we rang the emergency services who were here in no time to help rectify what was going on because it was just getting worse over time.”
“They got to the bottom of it, it was the heat. Causing the pavement to erupt. It was a massive pedestrian issue and they quickly closed the area down to protect the public.”
“It was the hottest day of the year yesterday, so of course we had to give them an ice cream. Big massive thank you to Humberside Fire & Rescue Service. “
