Local author Mike Wilson from Burstall Hill has won £50 in a recent writing competition.
As a joint runner-up, Mike also received membership of the Writers’ Bureau.
Mike has a wealth of published material behind him which include; The Talbot Times for Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, and a spoof local newspaper to raise money for charity. In 2011, he collaborated with Chris Bonnett to produce ‘The Great War Heroes of Bridlington.’ Then in 2014, he created and produced two newspapers to celebrate the filming of Dad’s Army in and around the town.
In addition to earlier articles in local and regional magazines, Mike has written and self-published many books of Bridlington interest, and currently compiles the newsletter for Bridlington U3A.
Mike’s local history pieces appear within the Bridlington Echo and on the internet.
Currently, the information about Bridlington’s Great War soldiers is featured at Bridlington Priory’s ‘Remembering the Fallen.’ Cardboard silhouettes of the 334 men whose names are on the Cenotaph are seated in the nave of the church. Mike has compiled a booklet of text and photographs to record the event.
At last year’s National Association of Writers’ Groups Festival of Writing he received a runners-up certificate from Sir Julian Fellows, creator of Downton Abbey, with a story featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Some of Mike’s short stories can be read in ‘Mike’s Shorts,’ and his humorous poetry, including many other limericks, can be seen in ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine,’ both available from Lodge Books, South Back Lane.

A flautist in the Welsh Philharmonic.
