A partnership between East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s domestic violence and abuse partnership (DVAP) team and the RSPCA, is aiming to raise awareness about domestic abuse.

The council will host free online sessions to raise awareness of how perpetrators use pets to coercively control victims by threatening, harming or withholding care from a much-loved pet. For many victims, fear for their pet’s safety can be a significant barrier to seeking help or leaving.

The sessions will be held on Wednesday 14 and Wednesday 21 October and are aimed at anyone whose work brings them into contact with animals and their owners. This can range from veterinary staff to groomers, pet sitters, kennels and catteries or animal-related businesses.

The sessions will explore the links between domestic abuse and harm or threats towards animals. This includes how domestic abusers can use pets to coerce and control victims, and why concern for a pet can make it more difficult for someone to leave an abusive relationship.

They will also provide guidance on how professionals can signpost someone for specialist support and to respond safely and sensitively to keep both people and pets safe.

The work forms part of Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, this October. This year’s theme of ‘spot the signs, start the conversation,’ focuses on the vital role everyone can play in recognising abuse and helping those affected.

Residents are encouraged to be aware of the signs that someone may be experiencing abuse.

This can include changes in behaviour, mood or confidence, withdrawal from family and social networks, or unexplained injuries or frequent ‘accidents’

It can also involve a partner who is overly controlling, jealous or checks up constantly, or limited access to money, transport or communication.

Residents are encouraged to support friends and family, including listening without judgment, reassuring them that they are not alone, and that the abuse is not their fault. It is also vital to ensure victims know they are not isolated and that support is available.

Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said: “We’re committed to working with all parts of society to tackle violence against women and girls. It’s great to work with the RSPCA and pet professionals to raise awareness about this vital issue

“Nobody should suffer alone and the council’s DVAP website provides information and support. In urgent matters, where there is a belief of immediate danger, always call the police on 999”

Professional and self-referrals (calling about your own situation) can be made by calling 01482 396368 or completing the online DVAP self-referral form.
