A new exhibition at Sewerby Hall takes visitors on a journey through the history of the estate’s gardens, revealing how they transformed from open fields into the private gardens of today.

Now open to the public, the Plants, Trees and the Country House exhibition is a collaboration between Sewerby Hall and Gardens and members of the Yorkshire Country House Partnership, with each country house member telling its own story about the plants and trees unique to their site.

It explores the Georgian, Victorian and early twentieth century periods, through the lens of the head gardeners of the estate.

It includes the stories of the gardeners who oversaw the enclosure of the lands and building of the garden in the early 19th century and its redevelopment during the Victorian era.

The exhibition also showcases the work of the gardener who oversaw its transition into a public park for East Yorkshire residents, in the 1930s, where amenities such as a car park, café and rifle range were installed.

Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: “This is a great exhibition to highlight the fascinating history of Sewerby Hall, and the dedication of its gardeners over the centuries.

‘’We encourage residents and visitors alike to attend, explore the beautiful gardens, delve into the attraction’s rich history and find out more about everything that Sewerby Hall has to offer.”

The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, 20 September.

Sewerby Hall, Gardens and Zoo are open daily for all visitors, standard admission charges apply.
