A fun event which will bring the skills of construction and the demands of driving on a specially-made course is set to bring thousands of spectators to Bridlington.

The Super Soapbox Challenge is set to arrive in Bridlington on the 11 September and local businesses and residents are urged to take part – either by entering a team or coming along to watch the weird and wonderful spectacle.

The event starts and 10.am and with soapboxes setting off at regular intervals throughout the day.

Lots of fun at the Soapbox Challenege. Photo: Submitted.

It is free of charge to spectate along the route and there will be plenty of vantage points to watch the ‘wacky races’ in action.

The event welcomes daring teams to build and race their very own wacky, non-motorised soapbox cart along the downhill course starting on Bridlington’s South Marine Drive before finishing on the promenade below.

It’s not just about the fastest cart that can make it down the track in one piece (or at least almost one piece), but trophies will also be awarded for those entrants that go above and beyond, with ‘Most Innovative Cart Design’, ‘Best Turned-Out Soapbox Crew’ and ‘Joker of the Day’, also up for grabs.

The winning, and more importantly, bravest team, will be able to race to raise money for their individual chosen charity or you can contribute to the event’s official charities which include the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and RNLI.

The event is being held on the Southside of Bridlington, Photo: Trevor Hedges/Echo Media Group.

Yorkshire Coast BID, who are organising the fun-packed day, commented:“The event provides a perfect opportunity to not just raise funds for charity, but also bring together your colleagues or group of friends for a day you certainly won’t forget. We’re sure there’ll be a lot of thrills and spills along the way!”

Andrew Pearson, Event Marketing Director, added: “This is going to be a fantastic, fun-packed day for all the family. Everyone will also have the chance to meet our favourite champion soapbox racer and mascot, Sir Sidney Cartalot.”
