Lighthouse Fisheries based on High Street in Flamborough, recently made waves in Norway after being revealed as one of the top fish and chip shops in the UK at the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards.
To mark this success, the shop’s general manager Gary Sharples was invited on a seafood study trip to visit the western shores of Norway, where he joined eight other category award winners representing the best of British fish and chips.
And last week, the family run fish and chip shop was also featured in The Times which had compiled a list of the best 18 places across the UK to visit for fish and chips.
Earlier in July Gary visited the port city of Ålesund to learn about the largest cod stocks in the world, and experienced first-hand the Norwegian fleet’s world-class sustainable fishing, processing, and quick-freezing facilities.
He also met with Norwegian fishing industry leaders and studied the science behind the country’s leading fishery management programme.
Speaking on the value of sustainable seafood, Frank Bakke-Jensen, the Norwegian Director of Fisheries, told the group: “Knowledge for how to sustainably manage marine resources is one of our biggest and most important contributions to a growing world population.”
Lighthouse Fisheries of Flamborough has seen nothing but success since opening its doors on the local High Street in June 2021, and was recently named in the UK’s top 50 Fish and Chip Takeaway list from top industry publication Fry Magazine. The popular chippy scored 96% over 2 mystery visits between 2022/2023, and has been a longstanding supplier of sustainable cod and haddock to the UK.
Victoria Braathen, the Norwegian Seafood Council UK Director, said: “It’s important to us to support the fish and chip industry and help celebrate the successes within, making it a pleasure to host the winners of the 2023 National Fish and Chip Awards on an educational study trip to Norway for knowledge sharing and networking among key industry stakeholders.”
The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) also joined the winners on the trip, with President Andrew Crook commenting: “The National Fish and Chip Awards are the biggest driver of standards in the fish and chip industry, and we also take pride that they have built a strong network for fish and chips across the UK.”
