The traditional Great Gale service, which is normally held at the Bridlington Priory, will have a new venue – but for this year only.
Due to the large scale rewiring works within the Priory it was suggested by Richard Dunk, who is the Chairman of the Bridlington Lifeboat Management Group, that the Great Gale Service could be held within the new boathouse on South Marine Drive. The Priory vicar, Rev. Matthew Pollard, agreed to the move, due to the works within the church.
Andy Brompton, who is the Press Officer for the Bridlington RNLI, said: “Due to ongoing work and maintenance at the Bridlington Priory the Rector Reverend Mathew Pollard was concerned that the annual Priory Great Gale service would have to be cancelled this year.
But his fears have been alleviated by Bridlington’s RNLI Chairman Richard Dunk who along with the lifeboat crew has invited the Reverend Pollard to hold the Priory Great Gale service at the new boathouse.”
Richard Dunk added: “Bridlington Lifeboat station were only too pleased to help Mathew and the congregation by remembering not only the lifeboat crew lost on that terrible day in 1871 but an incident in history that remains one of Great Britain’s major sea disasters.”
