The Bridlington Echo is proud to announce our involvement in supporting the appeal to purchase and install three Tommy Silhouettes is the Memorial gardens on Prospect Street.
A total of £3,000 is needed to fund the purchase, installation, insurance, and maintenance of the Tommy statues. A soldier will stand at each of the three gates to the Memorial Gardens in memory of those who lost their lives in World War One.
It is all the more poignant that this year commemorates the centenary of the end of the Great War, the bloodiest in history.
Veteran Mike Rubery, who is Vice Chairman of the Bridlington Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Secretary of the Royal Naval Association, is spearheading the campaign along with your community newspaper the Bridlington Echo.
Said Mike: “The life-size, 6ft aluminium silhouettes will stand in memory 24/7 and we hope to purchase them in time to be installed for the centenary remembrance activities on the 11th November 2018.”
Your donation and the funds raised through the sales of the Tommy figures will also contribute to the work of the following charities:
Project Equinox: Housing Veterans and Medical Students
Commonwealth War Graves Foundation
Mike added: “Please give generously, from the people of Bridlington to the fallen of Bridlington, we would like to raise these funds before 30th September to ensure the Tommies stand at the gates in time for the activities. So if you are a Bridlington business, individual or a group association please help remember those who have fallen.”
Bridlington War Memorial records over 330 names of those who left the town to serve in World War One…..sadly these were the unlucky ones who never returned.
From 16-year-old George Denny to Edward Walkington who was the last Bridlington man to be killed in action, the hundreds of names represent brave men who gave their lives in the biggest and bloodiest war the world has known.
To pay further tribute to these brave men, a fitting memorial of three Tommy Silhouettes, guarding each of the gates to the War Memorial gardens, the ECHO is launching the Tommy Appeal to help raise £3,000 to fund this unique memorial.
