Bridlington Coastguard is urging the public to take extra care during periods of poor weather, particularly along the seafront and promenades.
Strong winds and high tides can lead to powerful wave overtopping, which can be extremely dangerous. Waves may appear manageable but can suddenly surge, sweeping people off their feet and pulling them into the sea.
A spokesperson for Bridlington Coastguard said:
“We strongly advise members of the public to keep well back from the shoreline, sea walls, and harbour entrances during stormy conditions. Please do not take risks for photographs or out of curiosity, and always follow local safety signage and advice.
If you see someone in difficulty along the coast, do not attempt a rescue yourself. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
