Local fundraiser Karla Kemp has progressed to the next round of the Local Hero Awards after being nominated for her inspiring charitable work in the Charity Champion category.

Karla has raised more than £3,000 for the Bring Back a Smile charity through a series of long-distance runs and marathons, demonstrating remarkable dedication to helping others.
Her fundraising began in a deeply personal story. Karla’s stepson, Ronnie Kemp-Duke, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2018 at the age of four. After numerous hospital appointments and tests, he was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he underwent extensive treatment over several years. Today, Ronnie has made a full recovery and is living a happy, healthy life and is often seen scoring goals for his local football team with dad Vaughne and Karla cheering him on from the touchline.

The Local Hero Awards celebrate individuals who make a significant difference in their communities. This year’s ceremony will take place on 17 October 2026 at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham, bringing together 500 guests for a prestigious awards and dining event.

Speaking about her achievement, Karla said she was delighted to reach the next stage but is now calling on the public for support. “I’m through to the next round for the Charity Champion award and I need your help,” she said, encouraging people to cast their votes and share the page widely.
