A veteran Royal Engineer from Bridlington is appealing for help with donations of knitted poppies for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal later this year.

Denis Scaife will be carrying out a mammoth fundraising drive on the rail network up and down the country and selling the knitted poppies to passengers on the East Coast mainline services.

Over the years, veteran Denis who was a former Non Commissioned Officer (sapper) with the Corps of Royal Engineers and also a former police sergeant, and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the RBL on what is now
affectionately know as the Poppy Express.

Denis is appealing for knitters to help him by producing poppies so he can give them to people who donate to the fundraising campaign on the rails.

Denis explained:“In 2019 we raised over £6000 in six return trips. Sadly the pandemic stopped us doing this in 2020/21.

“We sell literally hundreds of knitted poppies as the ladies love to wear them . I am seeking help in asking the ladies (and gents) to get out their knitting needles and supply us with as many knitted poppies as possible.”

The annual Poppy Appeal commences at the end of October, so Denis hopes this will give knitters a chance to make plenty of poppy creations.

“Annually – together with colleagues – I run the Poppy Express from Doncaster to Kings Cross. The LNER are very supportive and we have their full backing with the fundraising appeal.” added Denis.
