An ordnance disposal team was called to Bridlington this evening (Saturday 30 May) to detonate a grenade on the North Beach.
The device, later identified as a grenade dating from the Second World War era, was initially found by a member of the public using a metal detector.
It is understood the grenade was initially taken to an address near Marton Gate in Bridlington before authorities were alerted.
Several households in the Marton Gate area were asked to evacuate temporarily earlier this evening to ensure public safety.
Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers removed the device from the address near Marton Gate for safe disposal on North Beach. They worked alongside police and members of Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team.
As a precaution, an area of the North Beach was sealed off while the device was assessed and safely detonated.
Police and coastguard personnel thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the operation.
The discovery serves as a reminder that wartime ordnance can still occasionally be uncovered along the East Yorkshire coast. Anyone finding a suspected explosive device is urged not to touch or move it and to contact the Coastguard immediately.
