Several residents in the Bempton and Flamborough area have contacted the Bridlington Echo after heavy snowfall during the week caused major problems on the roads in and around the headland villages.
Residents have been contacting the Echo and taking to social media claiming that the roads were treacherous and have not been gritted.
A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “This week, Bridlington and surrounding areas, like much of the East Riding, experienced severe weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, rain, sleet, and snow showers, which are among the most challenging conditions for our winter services team to manage.”
The roads around Crofts Hill in Flamborough, Buckton, Bempton and Jewison Lane were also reported as causing ‘major issues’.
“Vehicles were spotted taking several attempts to get up inclines and some became stuck in the process on Crofts Hill. Several villagers from Flamborough came to the aid of motorists.” said one resident.
Several businesses closed, including the Martonian on Jewison Lane and The Gallery Tea Rooms in Buckton with the roads being described as ‘sheet ice’ and ‘dangerous’ by local villagers.
County councillors Liam Dealtry and Jayne Phoenix, who have wards covering the affected areas, have also taken to social media to ask for any examples of roads not being treated by gritters or ice and snow causing issues major issues for vehicles.
The ERYC spokesman continued: “On the evening of 19 November, in anticipation of the forecasted snowfall, a full treatment was carried out of our precautionary network (main roads) between 4pm and 8.30pm.
“This was followed by an early morning treatment between 2am and 6.30am covering both our precautionary and secondary networks (main roads and some side roads).
“Then on 20 November, from 6.30pm-midnight the primary and secondary networks were treated, followed by another treatment of the precautionary network from 2am to 5.30am the next morning.
“Due to the closure of Bempton Lane, which is part of the precautionary network, this road couldn’t be treated. However, the advertised diversion route – via the B1229 to Flamborough and then Bridlington via the B1255 – was treated as part of the precautionary network.
“We urge all drivers to remain vigilant to prevailing weather conditions, plan their journeys carefully, and make use of treated routes whenever possible.
“We hope people understand that, given the size and rural nature of the East Riding, as well as our limited resources, it’s unfortunately not possible to keep all roads continuously clear of ice and snow.
“However, we work diligently around the clock to reduce risks and enhance safety by applying salt to lower the freezing point of water on our roads.”
