The Bridlington and Driffield branch of the RSPCA have around 30 kittens in their care looking for new homes as well as a lot of adult cats. Many of the kittens are now 12 weeks old and they need to be in new homes with loving families now.
A sad story that will hopefully have a happy ending involves two kittens now in the care of the local RSPCA cattery.
Hecate was abandoned in a garden when her owner moved out.
She was havily pregnant and only a young cat herself.
A spokesperson for the Bridlington RSPCA takes up the story:
“We think she must have got pregnant when she had her first season – around 6 months of age.
“She had four kittens when and did struggle giving birth and was obviously in great distress… but once the kittens were born she was a very good attentive mum in looking after her babies.
“Inexplicably a few days later she nibbled her kittens ears off.
“They were all immediately taken to the vets to be checked over and the only reason the vet could give for this to happen was because she had become a mum at such a young age.
“This was very upsetting but the kittens are all fine and really cute (as you can see in the photo of Bramble and Spike). Their two siblings Thorn and Nettle are a mirror image of them.

The spokesperson added: “There are so many unwanted cats and kittens needing space in the rescue centre now – but when we are full we are full!
“As soon as a cat or kitten is adopted there is another taken in to fill the vacancy.”
