Charlie Dewhirst, MP for Bridlington and the Wolds, hosted a group of enthusiastic pupils from New Pasture Lane Primary School at the Houses of Parliament in London recently.
The children began their day with a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster, taking in some of the most iconic rooms in British politics. They then sat in on a session of the Department for Transport’s question time, offering them a front-row seat to the workings of government and parliamentary debate.
During the visit, the pupils heard from Mr Dewhirst about how the UK’s democratic system operates — from how laws are made to how MPs represent their constituents. They also took the opportunity to ask thoughtful and impressive questions, sharing ideas on how Parliament could be made more engaging and accessible to younger people.
“It was brilliant to see such curiosity and maturity from the pupils,” said Mr Dewhirst. “They had some really excellent suggestions, and I was struck by how much they care about their community and the country. We need more of that energy in Westminster.”
Mr Dewhirst emphasised that this visit is just the beginning: “All local schools are able to visit Parliament — you just need to register. It’s a free, invaluable educational opportunity.
