A giant in local theatre has been honoured by having an auditorium named after him.
Bob Downing has been involved with the Spotlight Theatre in Bridlington for over 40 years and recently has retired from his position as treasurer.
Bob, along with his wife Judith, was asked to call down to the theatre on West Street in Bridlington on the pretence of some administrative matters, but on arrival found members of the Spotlight cheering and clapping him as they saw a newly installed sign unveiled in his honour.

The sign reads ‘The Bob Downing Auditorium’ and is a fitting tribute to his unstinting work that has helped make the Spotlight Theatre a firm favourite for locals and visitors alike.

Mike Sheldon from the Spotlight explained: “Bob has just retired from his role as treasurer- although he is still actively involved with the running of the theatre.”
“Without Bob and the dedicated support of his wife Judith, the Spotlight wouldn’t have happened.
“Bob is an inspiration to us all, both on stage and off. He is affectionately known as Mr Spotlight and now the recognition of his hard work of well over 40 years is there for everyone to see when they visit,”

Over the decades Bob has held almost every volunteer administrative post and also been the star in many plays and musicals. He is fondly remembered for playing the character Topol in the musical Fiddler on the Roof…described by many as a role he was made for.

Bob and his wife were also asked to cut a specially made cake for the occasion and enjoyed a few more delightful hours in the theatre auditorium.
