A Bridlington writer has turned personal hardship into literary success with the release of his debut novella, A Life of Christmas, which has already earned 100 per cent five-star reviews and secured a place on the shelves of three local libraries.
Author Damon Lee Selby, who writes under the name Damon Lee, began the book during what he describes as one of the most difficult periods of his life.
“I became unwell two and a half years ago while on holiday, and things went downhill from there,” he explained. “I ended up leaving my job and spent around 90 per cent of my time in bed. I developed depression and severe anxiety, so I needed to do something meaningful with my time — so I wrote a story.”
That story grew into a 26,000-word novella, developed over several months as Damon focused on his recovery. After receiving offers from hybrid publishers, he chose to self-publish through Kindle Direct Publishing — a decision he says has already paid off.
“Since then, I’ve sold over 50 copies and had the book taken into three local libraries,” he said.
Released at the end of September, the 208-page novella has resonated with readers, who have praised its emotional depth and uplifting message.
Set against the warmth and reflection of the festive season, the story follows a central character whose life quietly unravels and reshapes as Christmas approaches. Through strained relationships, resurfacing memories and moments of quiet solitude, the protagonist is confronted with what has been lost — and what may still be found.
The book explores Christmas as a catalyst for renewal, guiding its character from loneliness and uncertainty towards clarity, connection and hope. At its heart, A Life of Christmas is a story about love, memory and the courage it takes to embrace change.
Damon says he hopes his journey will encourage others who may be struggling.
“If sharing my story helps even one person realise they’re not alone, then that means as much to me as finishing the book,” he said.
