The video shows a young deer running accross one of the carriageways on Fortyfoot, which is one of the main roads in Bridlington.

It is also a timely reminder how deer can run out unexpectedly into the road, unaware of oncoming vehicles.

Luckily the deer avoided collision and ran off unharmed towards the Martongate area, north of the town.

The Echo ran an article yesterday (16th May) telling the sad story of how an injured deer had to be put to sleep after making its way into Bridlington town centre.

Despite help from two members of the public, vets and volunteers from Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary it was decided the young fawn was sbeyond rehabilitation and sadly had to be euthanised.

East Yorkshire-based Aldgate Vets, which has a new small animal hospital in Bridlington and serves farm clients throughout the region, urged residents to think carefully when they see deer in urban environments or involved in road collisions.

Director and vet Giles Moore said: “Deer running free in the middle of a town are primarily a road hazard and a general public safety issue so in that case we recommend that people call the police.

“In the event of a traffic collision, the police may need to be called if there is an obstruction in the road and then the appropriate animal charity, who may call in a vet to assess any injuries.

“Never put an injured deer in your car as they can often be stunned and then come to, panic and thrash around violently, which is dangerous for the deer and car passengers too.

“A stunned deer may be calmed down at the roadside by having a blanket thrown over its head to dull its senses while you wait at a safe distance for it to hopefully recover.”

Whitby Wildife Sanctuary, who are often called to assist with animal welfare issues in this area echoed the advice of the vets.

“If deer are not in danger then it’s best to leave them alone and they should make their way back to the countryside. Keep dogs away and also keep nosie and human disturbance to a minimum.” a spokeswoman told the Echo.
