A well-known and highly respected Bridlington PCSO who sadly passed away last year has been honoured by cadets and staff at the police station on Ashville Street in the town.

A large photo montage has been created for the cadet’s meeting room and a memorial shield has also been donated by Liz’s son Graham Smith, also a police officer, who travelled to Bridlington to hand over the award.

The shield is to be presented annually to a cadet for Outstanding Community Spirit and is inscribed with the words ‘There are special people in our lives who never leave us even after they are gone.”

Liz passed away last year aged 74 and was thought to be the oldest police officer still working in the country.

She could often be spotted on her trusty moped visiting people in the villages on her beat where she became an integral part of the community.

Liz also helps with the police cadets and was a familiar face around the local schools and village meetings where she gave invaluable advice on telephone scams and online safety for both younger and older residents.

She was awarded a well deserved MBE for her unstinting service to the police and Bridlington community in 2010 and enjoyed a day out at Buckingham Palace to receive her award.

As a great fan of the late Queen, Liz was overwhelmed by the whole experience and describes it as one of the best days of her life.
