Toilets at Filey Railway Station were permanently closed in October following repeated vandalism, just two days after the station marked its 180th anniversary.
Northern Rail took the decision after another incident of extreme damage.
Steps had been taken in recent years to tackle vandalism and anti-social behaviour, including cutting opening hours, but the problems continued. The closure came less than a year after Network Rail completed a £3.6m refurbishment of the station, which included work on the toilets.
When the station opened on 5th October 1846, its arrival was celebrated as a boost for the town, with railway chairman George Hudson proposing a toast to “prosperity to the town and trade of Filey”.
It is a sad reflection of the times that a piece of Filey’s heritage has been damaged.
