A day of bird box building will take place at Danes Dyke nature reserves this half term.
At this time of year, birds begin looking for a safe place to nest, and building a nest box is a perfect way to attract birds to local gardens ready for spring and help to conserve our natural wildlife.
The events, put on by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Countryside Access Team, are happening in time for half term activities for families across the East Riding and also for National Nest Box Week happening from 14-21 February.
All equipment and materials will be provided by the Countryside Access Team.
Senior Countryside Access Officer, Bev Hylton, said:
“Putting up a nest box in February is one of the best things you can do for your garden birds. Sometimes our gardens and parks are so neat and tidy that birds cannot find the natural holes, nooks and crannies they need to live in. I really enjoy making nest boxes, and I’m looking forward to helping visitors to make their own box for birds during half term.”
The event will be taking place at:
Danes Dyke Local Nature Reserve
Wednesday, 14 February: 10am, 11am, 12pm.
There are eight spaces per session and sessions will last one hour.
The event is suitable for anyone aged over five but all children must be accompanied by an adult, who will also be needed to help build the bird box as this will require support from an adult.
Tickets cost £5 per family and all equipment will be supplied to build one bird box.
