A small rabbit rescue organisation based in Bridlington is calling for help.
In 2020, Acorn Rabbit Rescue was set up as a group of animal lovers recognised the need for a local organisation specifically for rabbits.
A spokesperson for the Acorn Rabbit Rescue said: “All of us involved in the rescue are rabbit owners and have owned and cared for rabbits for many years.”
Those who are part of the rescue are members of the Rabbit Welfare Association and they are also an approved BABBA Ethical Rescue group.
The year began well for the group with three of their rescue rabbits finding loving homes. Since then rehoming has come to a complete standstill and there haven’t been any adopters.
“We currently have 14 rabbits in care of the rescue and 2 beautiful guinea pigs. Two of the rabbits are long stay but the remaining 12 need loving homes as do the pair of guinea pigs.” explained a spokesperson.
The rescue wants to encourage people to adopt rabbits rather than buy them from a pet shop or breeder as people are still buying rabbits as every day pets and the rescuer is then asked to take the unwanted ones when the novelty has worn off or there is a change in circumstances.
The spokesperson added: “We are at the point now where we may have to turn the rescue into a sanctuary and the rabbits in care will stay with us for the rest of their lives and we will take no more in.”
The decision has already been made not to take any more guinea pigs when the remaining ones, Bubble and Squeak, have been rehomed as there is sadly no volunteers available willing to foster guinea pigs.
