Bempton Lane in Bridlington is now fully open this afternoon (31st January, 2025).
Local resident Peter Firth 79, said: “It’s been a long time coming, but so worth the wait.
“It will save me at least 20 minutes on my journey if I want to head up to Bempton.”
“I was so excited to try out the new roundabout and it didn’t disappoint.” added Peter.
The closure, which has been in place since September, has been deemed necessary to complete construction on a new roundabout that is part of a larger development project linking housing developments along the northern outskirts of the town
A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) told the Echo: “The project was expected to take up to six months to complete. For context, the A165 Scarborough Road roundabout build took approximately 11 months.”
The estimated costs for the current construction is understood to be around £1 million.
The opening will come to a relief for residents in the villages on the North side of Bridlington as some had to divert around Jewison Lane and onwards through to Sewerby and back in to Bridlington adding up to 20 minutes for some journeys.
The closure was lifted temporarily over the Christmas and New Year holiday, but re-instated on 6th January, 2025.
The ERYC spokesperson added: “The roundabout’s construction is essential for accommodating hundreds of new homes planned for the northern outskirts of Bridlington. This development is intended to unfold in phases over the coming years.”
