Bridlington boxing duo Makhaya Widnall and Frankie Thompson have won on the road again.
After their victories in Doncaster the previous week the pair travelled to Leicster to take place in the National Quarter finals of the Junior Championships with a place in the countries top 4 up for grabs for the winners.
Widnall was the first on the bill facing off against Cory Goulding of the Scunthorpe Boxing Club.
Goulding came to the ring with an impressive resume having won more than 80% of his contests to date but Widnalls range, footwork and boxing skills kept him ahead of the East Midlands boxer.
Widnall scored well throughout the bout and again upped the pace even further in the final round to come out a unanimous points winner and through to the semi finals.
Frankie Thompson was boxing Bonick Smith from the Mighty Mariners Boxing Club in Grimsby.
Whilst Thompson was the more experienced of the two boxers, Smith came to the ring with an impressive record of his own having only tasted defeat on one occasion previously.
The bout started off a little slow for the early part of the round with both boxing having a look at each other but as the round went on the pace increased.
Thompson was having most of the success at range but Smith was having his own successes at times too. Smith continued to try and find a way through but the skills and strength of Thompson were perhaps more than he has been used to previously.
After three rounds of boxing the judges were unanimous in their decision once again with the decision going in favour of the Bridlington boxer
Head Coach Damien Grant said: “It’s not easy to keep performing to the best of your ability week after week but that’s what these boys are doing.
“They are facing some really good opposition throughout with a range of different styles to keep adapting to each week.
“Both boys will look forward to the semi finals where again there are some familiar names.
Both boxers are likely to come up against opposition that has previously beaten them but that won’t phase the lads who are up to the challenge and looking forward to showing how far they have developed recently.”
