Plans are under way to put Bridlington firmly on the national cultural map, as Bridlington Town Council explores a bid to become UK Town of Culture in 2028.
Working alongside East Riding of Yorkshire Council, town leaders say the ambitious proposal could bring major investment, community pride and a year-long programme of arts, performances and creative events.
Officials believe Bridlington has the “resources, talent, drive and skill” to assemble a strong bid capable of competing with towns across the country. If successful, the town would host a packed cultural programme showcasing local artists, heritage and community voices.
The competition is open to small, medium and large towns, with entries judged by an expert panel. Judges will assess how each town tells its unique story, brings communities together and delivers a clear cultural vision. Towns can now submit Expressions of Interest, with the strongest bids progressing to a shortlist. Shortlisted towns will receive financial support worth tens of thousands of pounds to develop full proposals.
Three finalists will ultimately be chosen, with one winner crowned UK Town of Culture 2028 and awarded a £3 million prize. The two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to support cultural projects and infrastructure.
Bridlington Town Council is now urging residents to help shape the bid. Roadshow events and consultation opportunities will be announced soon, giving locals the chance to share ideas and contribute.
Leaders say community involvement will be vital, adding that the bid represents a “massive opportunity” to celebrate Bridlington’s identity and secure lasting benefits for the town.
