The Bridlington Priory churchyard has been highly commended in a national competition.
The Priory was entered in to The Council for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE) Best Churchyard 2022 competition – North and East Yorkshire section, and narrowly lost out to the winner which was St. Catherine at Barmby Moor.
As well as Bridlington, two other churches in the region were Highly Commended: St Peters, Upper Helmsley and St Mary’s at Kirkburn, near Driffield.
The judging criteria was for places where wildlife is encouraged and opportunities for peaceful reflection are available.
The CPRE report describes the Priory churchyard as an outstanding site to visit – stating,“… the magnificent Bridlington Priory. This is a conservation churchyard that is enhanced by scale and ornamentation, though slightly“urbanish”
The report added: “There are many and numerous features to explore in Bridlington Priory – it enhances a visit to the seaside! Many thanks to all you hard working volunteers for all the work you do to make our churchyards havens of conservation and tranquility.”
