A new exhibition at Sewerby Hall is entitled In Service opens on Saturday 11th January and will run until 13th April.
It explores the bleak choices available to the poor: life on the street or a life in service during the Victorian/Edwardian era.
Largely invisible to their elite employers, domestic servants and farm hands were the beating heart of country house estates like Sewerby.
In Service takes an in depth view with new research into the lives of key players in the Lloyd Greame household.
The house is open only at weekends until February half term, when for that week it’s open daily.
