The fourth and final Supermoon of 2023 made a celestial appearance over Bridlington and the East Yorkshire coast overnight creating a stunning scene for sky watchers, photographers and astronomers.

Some stunning images from Echo readers show the huge moon reflecting over the sea in the Bay of Bridlington.

This years Harvest Moon is classed as a supermoon and is also the fourth and final supermoon of 2023

Supermoons are a term for when the Moon is 360,000km or closer to Earth in its orbit.
During 2023, the July full Moon, was named the Buck Moon, the first full Moon during August the Sturgeon Moon, and last month’s was the Blue Moon…all were all designated as supermoons.

The full moon cycles occur every 29.5 days. This is how long it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth and complete one full phase of the lunar cycle, as measured from new moon to new moon.

Harvest moons are called this because for several days around this time of year, a near full moon rises around sunset.

Folklore say this moon provided farmers in the Northern Hemisphere with extra light to work by after the sun has gone down.
Nowadays all farm machines have bright lights attached to vehicles to illuminate the harvest or ploughing when it gets dark.
