The rare blue moon that shone brightly over Bridlington on the east coast last night, had many photographers out and about taking some stunning images.

A rare event of a huge full moon, combined with clear skies, meant that many people were able to view the stunning lunar spectacular in the sky.

The blue moon’ peaked on Wednesday (30 August), but will be visible all week and won’t happen again for another 14 years.

This super blue moon hasn’t been seen since 2009, and won’t happen again until 2037.

It is a combination of two lunar events – a supermoon, which occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, resulting in a very large and brighter appearance in the late summer sky, and a blue moon.

The term is used to describe the second full moon that occurs within a single calendar month, which doesn’t refer to the colour of the moon.

Many readers took the time to send in the images to the Bridlington Echo Facebook page, and this is still available to view.

Former Bridlington resident, Dave Mulliner , took the time to send over the picture of the blue moon from his new home in Australia.
