Stunning images of dolphin mother and calf frolicking in the sea below Bempton Cliffs have been photographed this morning (Tuesday 9th March)

A pod of approximately twenty Bottle-Nosed dolphins, some with calves, have been captured on camera in the seas just off the base of Bempton cliffs on the Flamborough Headland.

Photographer Kevin Groocock was on his daily exercise walk this morning when he was alerted that a pod of the dolphins were heading south from Hunmanby Gap.

Said Kevin: “I delayed my journey a little and when they reached Bempton they had spread out.”

This is the second sighting of Bottle-Nosed dolphins this year, with the first sighting, also below Bempton Cliffs, coming in late February.

Aberdeen University confirmed that numerous images taken last year of a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins were from a larger group

The pod, which had migrated southwards, were part of the Scottish Moray Firth population which had split off from the main group and headed down the east coast.

Over the duration of 2020 there were hundreds of sightings of several pods of dolphins, predominantly in the Bay of Bridlington, but also along the East and North Yorkshire coastline.
