A comedy film shot across Bridlington, Sewerby and Scarborough has earned international acclaim after picking up a major award on the global film festival circuit.

Gallimaufry, a feature-length sketch comedy film written and directed by Bridlington actor and filmmaker Leon Cole, recently won the Best International Feature Film award at the Golden Lion International Film Festival.
The independently produced film was shot on location along the Yorkshire coast during the summer of 2025, with scenes filmed in Bridlington, Scarborough and the village of Sewerby. The one-hour, two-minute comedy features a collection of humorous sketches set everywhere from modern-day Yorkshire to 1920s America.

The production has continued to attract attention since its public release in December 2025. Earlier this year, it was also named a quarter-finalist at the Lit Laughs International Comedy Film Festival in Harrogate.
The film stars local performers Aidan Mitchell, Harry Lee, Thomas Dawes, Leon Cole, Crystal Jackson and Daisy Wynn, all of whom are based in East or North Yorkshire.
Director Leon Cole said the project was inspired by the decline of sketch comedy on television.

“I noticed there is a gap in the entertainment industry for sketch comedy,” he said.
“Shows such as Little Britain, Monty Python, The Catherine Tate Show and Horrible Histories were major inspirations when directing Gallimaufry.
“People today often consume shorter content through social media, so I felt that could be used to draw in a new audience through a series of quick-fire comedy sketches.

“The cast have been absolutely fantastic and a joy to work with. I hope audiences enjoy the film as much as I enjoyed directing it.”
Cole is no stranger to the screen. The Bridlington performer has appeared in productions including Netflix’s Bodies, Channel 4’s Hullraisers, CBBC’s Jamie Johnson FC, Sky Cinema’s The Radleys and the BAFTA-nominated Horrible Histories: Gory Games.

More recently, he has appeared in Netflix’s Gandhi and Channel 4’s A Woman of Substance.
Parts of Gallimaufry have already been broadcast on television and radio, while the full film, behind-the-scenes documentary, deleted scenes and soundtrack are available to watch online.

The award success marks another achievement for Yorkshire’s growing independent film scene and highlights the region’s continuing appeal as a location for creative productions.
Gallimaufry is available to watch free online, with audiences also able to enjoy deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and the film’s soundtrack.
