Author and researcher Humphrey Keenlyside has written and published a detailed and historical book about the iconic department store Carltons of Bridlington.
The well renowned store was situated on the site of what is now Boyes and before that Binns, between King Street and Chapel Street in Bridlington town centre.

The historic building was highly praised as one of the best shopping venues in Yorkshire, attracting customers from all around the area and the country and even from abroad.
Humphrey was commissioned by the Carlton family to write the history of Carltons in time for Rachel Carlton’s 100th birthday on 28 March 2023.

Rachel is the widow of Philip Carlton, who sadly passed away in 1968 – the reason the store was closed.
Humphrey said: “I spoke to many people who worked at the store or used to shop there, as well as all five children of Philip and Rachel Carlton. I also received a lot of help from Sarah Hutchinson, who works in the local history and reference department of Bridlington Central Library.”

In 1968, Carltons was bought by Hammonds Ltd of Hull and the store was demolished the following year to make way for a new four-storey building.

The building now houses the Boyes department store after the closure of the previous occupiers Binns in the 1990s.
The book, entitled Carltons Limited – The Friendliest Store in Bridlington – A History: 1911-1968, is published by Carltons Publishers and retails at £12.
