Bridlington-based boxer Emily Asquith was just edged out in her boxing final today after travelling to the Newcastle for the 2023 England Boxing National Amateur Championships.

Emily, representing Bridlington Boxing Club, was facing opponent Grace Buckle from Miguel’s Boxing Club (London) in the 81+kg category, over three rounds in this evening’s event (22 April).

The gritty bout could have gone either way, with Buckle winning on a 3-2 split decision against the Bridlington Boxing Club heavyweight.

Emily, who spoke exclusively to the Bridlington Echo after the bout, said: “I’d say I’m not upset with my performance, I didn’t feel out boxed but the bout could’ve gone either way – proven by the 3-2 split, gives me something to work at!”
Her coach Damien Grant added: “After 7 years undefeated Emily Asquith long win streak finally came to and end.

“Obviously not what we went for and it is what it is but move on. Em took the defeat like a true sportswoman. Onto the next.”
The Championships – formerly known as the Elite National Championships and ABA National Championships – is the most prestigious amateur boxing competition in England, with a proud history dating back to 1881.

The tournament is open to competitors aged between 18-40 and offers weight categories ranging from under 49kg to 92kg (males) and under 48kg to 81kg (females).
