A talented skier who lives near Bridlington has been selected to represent England at the World Schools Championship next year.

Sixteen-year-old Jack Shephard has been selected to represent England at the World Schools Championships, which is taking place in Erzurum in Turkey between 11 – 19 February, 2023.

Proud mum Tracie explained: “This is a great achievement for Jack who has been training towards this since he was 12 years old – especially when we have no local ski facilities.

Jack, who lives at Fraisthorpe, near Bridlington is studying A-level Maths & double Engineering at Ron Dearing UTC in Hull.

Jack is a member of RTR ski club based in Sunderland and prior to lockdown he used to travel twice a week for training from the age of 12-14.

The talented skier is hoping to attract sponsorship to help him with travelling, equipment and accommodation costs.

“Covid put a stop to that but once restrictions where eased he went back to training but at training camps all over the UK on weekends so not to impact his schoolwork.

“In 2021 Jack finished the summer UK dry slope race season ranked number one U16 in the whole of the UK, Welsh U16 Champion, 3rd in the British Championships and overall champion at the UK National Schools Outdoor Championships.” said Tracie.

He was also selected onto the Welsh Ski Team qualifying due to his late grandmother coming from Wales.

In November 2021 he was awarded Bridlington Echo Sports & Community Award for Young Sportsperson of the Year and in June 2022 came second at The School Sports Partnership awards for outstanding individual performance in sport whilst representing Bridlington School out of 63 other schools.

“Jack has spent 10 weeks away last winter in the Alps with the British Ski Academy training and racing with his best result in the English Championships in Italy finishing 15th (U16) out of 67 boys which is a great achievement for someone that hardly spends much time away on snow.” continued Tracie.

“This last summer he moved up to a 1st year -U18 and finished 3rd in the British Championships, he is also the U18 Welsh Champion and managed to gain a podium place 10 times from 14 races.
