The Bridlington and East Coast fishing industry is breathing a sigh of relief after a major shipping incident off the Yorkshire coast involving two vessels
caused minimal pollution.
Jo Ackers, speaking on behalf of local fishing groups, said: “After the awful incident that occurred off the coast of
East Yorkshire on Monday, 10 March, the commercial fishing industry was concerned about any environmental impacts.
“As far as we are aware, it was aviation fuel and nothing else was spilled. This is lighter than seawater, so it should stay on the surface, and what didn’t burn should evaporate quickly.
“There was an exclusion zone of 0.6 miles (1 km) around each ship, but normal fishing activities can continue. There is fishing gear in the area and
this will be monitored closely.
“I think we can say it’s business as usual for the local fishing industry,” added Jo.
