ERYC Coastal Services have again put out a warning to walkers and beachgoers after large sections of cliff have fallen over the last week.

After weeks of heavy rain and then snow and several days of freezing temperatures, sections of the cliffs along the East Yorkshire Coastline (notably the areas along the North Beach towards Sewerby, Danes Dyke, South and North Landing and the bays around the Flamborough headlands),have become unstable and are liable to slippage and cliff falls of tons of rock and soil.

This is known as ‘freeze-thaw weathering’ which occurs when rocks and soil cliffs – which are or permeable – allow water to pass through.

This happens after periods of rain as water enters cracks in the rock.

As the temperatures drop below freezing point the water then freezes and expands causing the crack to widen.

As a thaw arrives and the ice melts and water makes its way further into the cracks and holes and the process repeats itself until the rock or soil splits entirely and causes erosion.

Other areas affected are the cliffs south of Bridlington from Fraisthorpe and onwards towards Spurn Point.

In many areas the cliffs have become unstable and there have been several significant cliff falls of rock and soil over the last few days.

A spokesperson for ERYC Coastal Services, said: “Please stay away from the cliff bottom if you are walking along the beach.

“Also if you are walking along the top of the cliffs, keep well away from the edge as there are significant undercuts in some places.” added the spokesperson.
