A veteran Royal Engineer From
Bridlington is set get ‘on track’ and raisefunds for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal.
Denis Scaife will be carrying out a mammoth fundraising drive on the
rail network up and down the country and selling the knitted poppies to
passengers on the East Coast mainline services.
He will also be joined by fellow veteran Martin Jolly, as well as several other volunteers.
Over the years, veteran Denis who was a former Non Commissioned Officer (sapper) with the Corps of Royal Engineers and also a former police
sergeant has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the RBL on what is now
affectionately know as the Poppy Express.
“We sell literally hundreds of knitted
poppies as the ladies love to wear them. I would like to sincerely thank all
the kind volunteers who got out their knitting needles and supplied us with hundreds of fantastic knitted poppies.”
“Annually – together with colleagues – I run the Poppy Express from Doncaster to Kings Cross. The LNER are very supportive and we have their full backing with the fundraising appeal.”
added Denis.
Denis also thanked the Bridlington
Londesborough Masonic Lodge for kindly donating several embroidered
shirts for collectors to wear and also thanked the rail service providers,
Northern Rail, Hull Trains and LNER for donating complimentary tickets.
Denis, Martin and the volunteers will be active on the railways until Friday 8 November.
This year, Denis has been invited to march with the Army Apprentices College, Chepstow, on the London Cenotaph parade on Sunday, 10th
November.
