Dozens of delightfully decorated Christmas trees adorn St John’s Burlington

Two voluntary groups have brought back the festive spirit to town and turned a Bridlington church into a Yuletide Tinsel Town.

St John’s Burlington Church has organised the popular Bridlington Christmas Tree Festival ans it takes place this December.

This year, the church volunteers will have a few extra pairs of hands to help out, thanks to Sewerby Women’s Institute (SWI).

The event was organised for many years by the Rotary Club until the group disbanded in 2022.

Dave Wilcockson, of SJB, said: “For the past 12 months, SWI members have been assisting at our successful Warm Spaces cafe every Monday: it seemed an obvious move therefore to join forces for this seasonal extravaganza. Together we hope to make this special event a ‘must-see’ in the run-up to Christmas.”

The church, next to Aldi on St John Street, will be home to the event from 1-17 December and local businesses, charities and schools are invited to join in the festive fun by adding a decorated tree to the display.

There’s no charge to take part and visitors to the festival will be voting for their favourite tree (fake or real).

In addition to a forest of twinkling trees, there’ll be several musical performances each weekend when the SWI will also be running free activities – a children’s competition to find naughty mice and the chance to make a delightful tree decoration. Of course, hot drinks, mince pies and other seasonal treats will be available.

Maria Prchlik, for SWI, said members were looking forward to being involved in such a sparkling festive occasion and added:

“It’s been another tough year for everyone so we hope this will go some way to lifting everyone’s spirits. We’re aiming to bring more sparkle than Strictly to the event, and we’d love as many folk as possible to drop in and start their Christmas celebrations with us.”

Entry is free, but donations are welcome with any money collected being divided between the church and Alzheimer’s UK.

The Festival was opened today -Friday 1st December -at 10.30am by The Mayor, Cllr John Arthur and the Mayoress Mrs Diane Arthur.

Following the opening, New Pasture Lane School Choir will sing carols.
